Cross Post – In defense of variation: A neurosurgeon takes on Atul Gawande

cakeFrom time to time on Neurosurgery Blog, you will see us cross-posting or linking to items from other publications when we believe they hit the mark on an issue. Today’s post originally appeared on KevinMD.com and is authored by Ahilan Sivaganesan, MD, a neurosurgery resident at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. Sivaganesan’s op-ed takes on Atul Gawande, MD, who published an article in the New Yorker, where he argued that medicine could learn from big chains, like the Cheesecake Factory, to improve the delivery of quality, cost-effective care.

Neurosurgery Blog also posted a blog entry about Dr. Gawande’s essay, and we said, “patients are not a piece of cheesecake, and neurosurgeons certainly hope that as the healthcare delivery system evolves, personalization and the paramount importance of the doctor-patient relationship are not lost in the shuffle.”
